Birth - 6 months
· Breastmilk or infant formula is all that a baby needs for the first 6 months of life. No other drinks or foods are needed.
Australian and international health authorities recommend exclusive breastfeeding until around 6 months. This means that milk (either breastmilk or formula) is the only thing necessary and recommended to give children under 6 months of age.
Starting solids before 4 months can be harmful as the baby’s digestive system is not mature. It can also increase the risk of food allergies and choking.
Babies should be fed breastmilk (or formula) until at least 12 months of age.
